How to use the word counter
This word counter gives you the number of words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in any text the moment you type or paste it. There is no button to press and no limit on length.
- Paste your text into the box, or start typing. The sample text is there only to show how the counts look; press Clear to remove it.
- Read the word count at the top of the results, and the detailed figures underneath.
- Check Top keywords to see which words you repeat most, then edit until the text reads the way you want.
Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, so it is safe to check a private letter, a contract draft or an unpublished article.
How each number is counted
| Figure | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Words | Runs of letters or numbers separated by spaces. Well-known and don't count as one word each; a dash or bullet on its own is ignored. |
| Characters | Every visible character plus spaces and line breaks. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one character. |
| Without spaces | The same count with all spaces, tabs and line breaks removed. |
| Sentences | Text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark (and 。!? in Chinese and Japanese). |
| Paragraphs | Lines that contain text. Empty lines between paragraphs are not counted. |
Chinese and Japanese are written without spaces between words, so splitting on spaces would turn a whole paragraph into one "word". Instead, each Chinese character and each kana counts as one word, which is how most editors and publishers measure these languages. Korean uses spaces, so it is counted like English.
Sentence detection is a best guess. Abbreviations such as "e.g." or "Dr." can add an extra sentence, and a list without full stops may count as a single sentence.
Reading time and speaking time
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute, a figure that comes from a large review of reading studies on adults reading non-fiction in English. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and podcasts.
Speaking time = words ÷ 150
Example: a 1,200-word blog post takes about 1,200 ÷ 238 ≈ 5 minutes to read. The same text read aloud takes 1,200 ÷ 150 = 8 minutes. If you have a 3-minute slot to speak, aim for roughly 450 words.
These are averages. Technical writing, a second language or a nervous speaker can all be slower, so leave some margin when timing a talk.
What keyword density tells you
Keyword density is how often a word appears compared with the total number of words. If "budget" appears 6 times in a 300-word text, its density is 6 ÷ 300 × 100 = 2%. The list shows the five most repeated words with three or more letters, skipping very common words like "the", "and" or "with" so the useful ones stand out.
Use it as a repetition check rather than an SEO target. Search engines care about clear, helpful writing, not a particular percentage, and stuffing a phrase into every sentence makes text harder to read. If one word dominates the list, try a synonym or restructure a sentence or two.
Common word limits
- Tweets and posts: X (Twitter) limits posts by characters, not words, and counts spaces.
- Meta descriptions: search results usually show around 150 to 160 characters before cutting off.
- Essays and applications: schools and employers state their own limits; check whether titles and references are included.
- Abstracts: journals commonly ask for 150 to 300 words, but always follow the author guidelines.
When a form gives a limit in characters, compare it with the Characters figure unless it says spaces are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
A word is any run of letters or numbers separated by spaces. Hyphenated words like well-known count as one, and punctuation on its own is ignored. In Chinese and Japanese, which have no spaces, each character counts as one word.
Do spaces count as characters?
In the main character count, yes: every space, line break and punctuation mark counts. The second figure, characters without spaces, removes all spaces, tabs and line breaks. Many forms with a character limit count spaces, so check which one they mean.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 minutes at an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute, and around 6 to 7 minutes when spoken aloud at 150 words per minute.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
Roughly 750 words at a comfortable speaking pace of 150 words per minute. Slow, careful delivery is closer to 120 words per minute, so plan for 600 to 750 words.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. All counting happens in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to a server or stored, so you can safely paste private documents.
